Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition

BARC is a not-for-profit, privately funded, no-kill animal shelter for homeless cats and dogs located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We have been in existence for nearly 20 years.

Our animals come from a variety of places

They come from the street, the police, the city shelter and other private shelters, and so forth. Dogs to be surrendered by their owners are put on a waiting list until a kennel opens up, or if we cannot take the animal in, we can place a photo and description on our page on the Petfinder.com website.

For the animals in our care, we provide clean kennels, high quality food and on-going medical attention.

Each animal that comes into the shelter is examined by the licensed vet on the premises, vaccinated, wormed, and tested for feline AIDS and feline leukemia or canine heartworm. If any medical problems are found at the time of the initial exam, the animal receives treatment at our expense.

All animals are spayed or neutered

If the animal is a young pup or kitten, we schedule a follow up spay/neuter appointment with the adopter and confirm that the procedure was done. If the adopter decides to spay/neuter the animal at his/her own expense, we require proof of spay/neuter.

In the past year BARC has placed over 1,200 cats, 600 dogs, 5 rabbits, and a variety of birds, reptiles and small mammals.

We have also rescued many dogs and cats from the streets and returned them to their original owners. When we cannot find a home for an animal, it always has a permanent home with us. We are presently caring for about 25 dogs and 125 cats and supervise the care of over 50 dogs and 100 cats in our Outreach Program annually.

BARC has also helped spay and neuter over 3,000 cats and dogs in the community to help decrease pet overpopulation.
